| The vine has been cultivated in these lands
for many centuries. Chronicles from the Middle Ages tell us
about the Sarría Estate and how the Lord of Sarría
accompanied King Sancho the Strong in the Battle of Las Navas
de Tolosa (1212).
Centuries later, we know that Juan de Azpilicueta, brother of
Saint Francisco Javier, patron saint of Navarra, financed his
brother´s studies in Paris out of farming this land. The
manuscript in which San Francisco thanks his brother for this
assistance has been preserved to this day.
In 1953, an important businessman of Navarra, Sir Felix Huarte,
bought the Sarría estate and this was when the vineyard
was fully established and the winery constructed. In this way
the production of wine under the brand Señorío
de Sarría was started. From its beginnings, the winery
focused on the production of high quality wines and it was a
precursor in selling wines under the Navarra seal of origin
(“D.O. Navarra”) throughout Spain.
In 1981 a new era began, but it was in 2001 that Bodega de Sarria
started a new and ambitious renovation project with the aim
of putting the winery in the vanguard of the national and international
market.
